Modifying the uAvionix tailBeacon baseplate for the Navion

Post by billla »

Many owners have considered the TailBeacon (https://uavionix.com/products/tailbeacon/) as a solution for ADS-B Out compliance. Note that the baseplate is drilled for #4 screws, and the stock Navion uses #6 screws to hold on the Grimes baseplate. If you've made changes to the tail light/strobe, then you'll need to determine what is in use.

We'll replace the stock #6 screws with two (2) MS24693C32 non-structural 6-32 #6 stainless screws and two (2) AN365-632A elastic stop nuts.

uAvionix approves modifying the baseplate with approval of your A&P.

To modify the baseplate for #6 screws, do the following:
  1. Drill the existing holes with a #27 bit.
  2. Use a piloted 100 degree countersink to open the countersink to allow the new screws to sit completely flush. NOTE: Any edge left proud will prevent the Tailbeacon from bayoneting into place.
  3. Attach the baseplate using the new screws. NOTE: Some rivnuts in the tail have become slightly out of position and may need to be adjusted.
  4. Attach the AN365-632A nuts to the back of the screws. This may provide a convenient ground if your A&P finds it acceptable.
