Welcome
Welcome
Welcome! In case you haven't heard, Yahoo Groups, as we know them, have essentially gone away, and it looks like all content there will be deleted on Dec. 14th. This website is being offered as a new place for Navion enthusiasts to congregate.
NavionInfo.com is being hosted by a fellow Navioneer free of charge to the community. For the past 20 years, the Yahoo group has been a great repository of information, and we wanted to make this new domain available for the group. The eventual goal is to have a place where we can get Navion tech information, which is currently scattered about in various places, all in one place. Eventually, the goal is for the homepage to have tech articles organized by topic.

Re: Welcome
Is it possible to get that 20 years of Yahoo content imported to this forum? That would be super helpful to us newbies.
Re: Welcome
Robin, that's going to be the trick/challenge. Yahoo has been clear as mud about what exactly is going to disappear. It is clear that any attachments/files that have been uploaded to the Yahoo group are going to be deleted. What is not clear, is whether or not the group messages are going to survive. Yahoo's "help" post does say that Conversations, Message Digests, and Message History are all going away, but we are unsure of what will happen to the original messages themselves. Even if the messages remain, I have my doubts about how searchable they will be, going forward.
Our ideal endgoal for this site is to make the homepage at http://www.NavionInfo.com an index of tech articles/prior discussion group threads, organized by topic. This forum will ultimately be only one component of the site. However, curating that content is going to be quite an undertaking. Going to need some volunteers.
I am not sure if there is a way to save the current Yahoo Group's content in its entirety. I'm trying to look into that, now. However, I do know that you can go and download your own content at https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/downlo ... 28671.html . We can at least start with that.
Coming soon will be a feature for a daily or weekly e-mail digest for this group, as has previously been available in the Yahoo group.
By the way, I do not personally know the admin(s) of the Yahoo group, and this forum was not created as a slight against them at all. That group has served its purpose for two decades. However, I believe we can all agree that Yahoo's lack of updates and clunky functionality make it a prime candidate for replacement. With Yahoo being unclear about exactly what is going to happen to our data, we felt it prudent to go ahead and set up an alternative here. I did reach out to the Yahoo group admin(s) through that system to invite them to be a part of this effort, but not knowing what does and doesn't work with Yahoo these days, I am unsure whether my message was even received.

Re: Welcome
Thanks for the invite and for starting this up!
Re: Welcome
Wanted to say a quick "thank you" to all who have joined up over here. Business has been brisk! Our original intention with setting up this site was merely to offer the online Navion community a new home, with Yahoo Groups going away. It was never our intention to "take over" the online Navion forum business. We reached out to the Yahoo Group administrator before starting this up, as we wanted to have him and that group here with us, all in one place. He ultimately decided to go in a different direction. But thanks to your support, we're going to continue here! Everyone is welcome.
I am, however, disappointed that I have made numerous posts in the old Yahoo group (which is still up and running, for now), thanking the moderator for his service, and inviting everyone to come check out this site, but none have been approved. The last message I sent was as follows:
"I'd like to publicly thank [the Yahoo Group moderator] for his dedicated service with this group -- it has been an invaluable resource for the Navion community! I understand this group will be migrating to a similar Groups format on a different site. For those of you wishing to stay with an e-mail-based discussion group, I encourage you to check that out. However, many of us have long wished for a modern online discussion forum similar to BeechTalk. To that end, NavionInfo.com is being offered as a new alternative – using the same forum software that BeechTalk has used so successfully. There, you’ll find organized, topical sections for General Navion Discussion, Technical Questions, Upcoming Events & Fly-Ins, and a Navion Marketplace. We see the two platforms as entirely different things that do not compete with one another, and we wish [the Yahoo group moderator] the best with his new groups site as well. Keeping this fleet flying and preserving its history is our common goal. Drop by, say hello, and post a photo of your Navion!"
Regrettably, this post, nor any of my previous ones were ever approved.
Again, it is not our intention to compete, but to offer a different thing. Success of this site depends on folks knowing about it. Success of the Navion depends on folks being able to find information.
As Dick says... Go fly your Navion!
